A Man with a Toothache
Shakespeare once stated ” A man with a toothache cannot be in love”, meaning simply that the attention demanded by the toothache doesn’t allow him to notice anything other than his pain. This seems to be the case when people are going through a job change.
A clear sense of purpose will provide a feeling of continuity and contentment to carry you through those inevitable changes. Developing a clear focus leads to confidence, boldness, and enthusiasm in living. If you cannot visualize what you want the future to be, you are likely to end up feeling like a victim of circumstances. If you want different results, you must change what you are doing. In fact, insanity is defined as continuing to do the same thing expecting different results.

I really like these ideas and feel they also apply to the consideration and pursuit of buying a franchise. He goes on to say “Your goal should be to plan your work around your life, rather than planning your life around your work.” This very much applies to choosing a franchise, make sure it fits in with the lifestyle you want to create. Make sure you have a list of questions that help you define whether the franchise opportunity is going to allow you to “plan your work around your life”. The other thought that also comes to mind is the saying “Fail to Plan then Plan to Fail”. So start planning, a good place to start is www.franchisechemistry.com We can help you be in love (with your life) and avoid the toothache!

Don’t Wait For The “Perfect Opportunity”
I found this article on Dane Carlson’s Business Opportunities Weblogwww.business-opportunities.biz
I thought it was great at capturing the essence of finding the right business.
From YoungEntrepreneur.com: Michael Dell was giving a lecture on the ABCs of entrepreneurship to a business class at his psuedo-alma mater, the University of Texas. He’s one of the Top 25 Businessmen Who Broke The Rules And Won, he made a $4.5 million salary last year and he’s the #14 Top Celebrity Entrepreneur.
Dell: “One of the things I benefited from when I started this business was that I didn’t know anything. I was just instinct with no preconceived notions. This enabled me to learn and change quickly without having to worry about maintaining any kind of status quo, like some of my bigger competitors.
The key is to listen to your heart and let it carry you in the direction of your dreams. I’ve learned that it’s possible to set your sights high and achieve your dreams and do it with integrity, character, and love. And each day that you’re moving toward your dreams without compromising who you are, you’re winning.
Don’t spend so much time trying to choose the perfect opportunity, that you miss the right opportunity. Whether you’ve found your calling, or if you’re still searching, passion should be the fire that drives your life’s work.”

The GPS and a Career Path
My daughter came home today after using her GPS to find her way to and from a somewhat familiar destination. She was going to just rely on the GPS to get her to where she was going to see how it “worked out”. She stuck it out even though she new at times that she really would have been better off making different decisions.
It’s kinda like when we get stuck in a career choice we don’t like, we keep listening to the voice and going in circles even though we know the direction is bad.
Moral of the story: there is usually more than one way to arrive at a destination on the road of life but you can save yourself time and frustration by mapping out a good route in advance and be willing to make adjustments when things aren’t going as planned or expected.

Doing Work that Matters by Helen M. Scully, MS, NCCC
- Have you spent some quiet time lately thinking about what really matters?
- Are you less comfortable staying with a job that is just OK?
- Have you reflected on the “value” of what you do?
- Are the “things” in your life taking a second seat to the people and relationships?
- Are you savoring simple pleasures more than ever?
If so, you are not alone. It could be said that the US population is experiencing a widespread wake-up call. Faced with economic uncertainty we are all focusing on the elements of our life we value the most.
Where are you in all of this? Perhaps your life is on track and you are doing work that you find rewarding. Good for you! However, I suspect you are in the minority. Most of us are feeling compelled to clarify our priorities. We feel a deep need to commit to reaching our personal and professional potential-now more than ever before.
Aligning your life with your interior values is achieved through deep reflection. Focusing your career on work that utilizes your true talents requires courage.
This inner fortitude and commitment to change is the “up side” of adversity. It is one of the ironies of our human condition. As you face challenges in your job or in your search for work in the next few months, you may find that you have a need to engage in meaningful work.
What is your mission? Finding out could open a new world of opportunities.

Ready, Set, Go…
You may have decided to go into business for yourself and are trying to find a franchise that makes sense for you. Here is a Ready, Set, Go to help get you started down that path.
Ready…
Get Ready, like a race you need to be prepared in advance, do your homework first. Don’t wait until you have your doors open to your business to realize you don’t like something about the concept. You need to understand all elements of the franchise opportunity in advance. Investigate specifically in no particular order: The investment, the funding, the business model, the market, the competition, and the company.
Set…
Get Set by putting your business plan in place. Take all your research information and put it into a business plan. I like the BusinessPlan Pro but it does not matter what you use just make sure you go through the exercise of building a business plan. Make sure it pencils out, as you go through the business plan you will see and think about things you may not have previously considered. Once you have finalized your plan and it makes sense you are set to Go.
Go…
Go, move forward by acting on your plan. Don’t get paralysis of the analysis; if you waited until you have all the information to do something you would never accomplish anything, there is always more to know. The most successful people are able to make decisions and initiate projects with the best information they have gathered and then make adjustments as necessary. Once you have started your business be prepared to make adjustments in your plan, nothing is static and you’ll want to make changes to your plan as things change.

Help Your Children Succeed, Your Child’s Strengths
As the parent of three children, two attending college and one more next year, I value information that can help me help them find their best direction in life. Not just any direction but one that will be rewarding and satisfying for them. They are very independent and have their career paths planned out and really don’t need my help…but of course, like all parents we always want is best for our kids (and after hearing that the average college student changes their major 5 times, it may save me some money and them some grief if I can help them discover the best path faster!)
I came across a book by Jennifer Fox, M.Ed. called Your Childs Strengths that is the best book I have read on the subject of identifying and utilizing strengths. You should you pick up the book if you have children of any age or are a teacher or counselor, it will help you see people in a new way and help them discover their true strengths.
From her site: “Every parent wants their child to be happy and successful, yet we are consistently drawn to ways of relating to children that prevent them from growing and thriving. In the rush to “fix” children and remediate their weaknesses, we are missing the essential ingredients to a fulfilling life: a focus on strengths.”
“Knowing the philosophy is just the beginning, what people need are practical examples of how to raise children to discover their unique talents. The best thing about this method is that all children—from high achievers to children with challenges, from toddlers to teens—can begin now to discover how to use their strengths, gain confidence, and map out their futures.”
Check out her site www.strengthsmovement.com there is a lot of good information there.
